What Is Chewelry?

25th Sep 2017

Chewelry is jewelry that's chewable (chew + jewelry = “chewelry”).  If you crave chewing on non-food items for any reason, chewable necklaces and bracelets are a way to safely satisfy that need (instead of chewing on other potentially harmful items like pencils, pens, shirts, toys, etc.).

Why is chewelry needed?

Chewing can be a very effective way to calm and self-regulate, especially if you're anxious or stressed or need to focus.  It’s similar to how some people bite their fingernails when they’re nervous, or pace back and forth, or tap their foot, etc.  Needing to chew on non-food items is often sensory-related, but not always.  For a lot more background on why some people need to chew,  check out this article.

Chewelry is also sometimes used as an alternative to other potentially harmful oral habits, like tooth grinding or thumb sucking.

Or it can also be used by individuals on a g-tube who can’t eat by mouth, but still crave or miss the act of chewing.

Speech / feeding therapists use chew tools as a way to help teach certain  oral motor skills like jaw strength and rotary chewing.

We’ve even seen some people use them to help stop smoking or as a diet aid to lose weight.

So they can be helpful in a lot of different situations!

Chewelry is designed to look like regular jewelry, so it's a very discreet way to chew for both kids and adults (there is no age limit on chewelry / needing to chew).  Chewelry comes in all kinds of different shapes, sizes, colors, and levels of "chewiness" from soft to firm to super firm.
