ARK began with a simple yet powerful idea:
In 2000, Debbie Lowsky, a speech-language pathologist, kept running into the same challenge during therapy sessions: the tools she needed simply didn't exist. She needed safe, effective ways to provide oral sensory input and support oral motor development, but nothing on the market quite worked.
So she partnered with her husband John, a mechanical engineer, to build something better.
Their first product was the Probe, a simple handheld tool that allowed Debbie to safely provide oral sensory input during therapy.
Not long after, Debbie was rapidly tapping a child's tongue with the Probe to increase stimulation. Watching this, John asked a simple question: What if it vibrated?
That led to the creation of the Z-Vibe®, a vibrating oral motor therapy tool that quickly became a cornerstone in speech and feeding therapy. Soon after came the Grabber®, the first chew tool designed specifically as a safe outlet for the sensory need to chew. And from there, the ideas kept coming from our customers. So we kept building.
More than 25 years later, ARK has developed over 175 tools used by therapists, parents, educators, and individuals around the world. Our products now support a wide range of needs, including:
Every product begins the same way the first one did — with a real challenge someone is trying to solve. A therapist needed a better feeding tool. A parent wanted a more discreet chew option for their teenager. Someone needed something safe to chew instead of fingernails or pens/pencils.
We listen, ask questions, and design tools that help. Because sensory needs aren't one-size-fits-all, our products come in a wide range of shapes, textures, and resistance levels, allowing people to find what actually works for them.
ARK products are designed and manufactured in Columbia, South Carolina, in our own facility out of premium food and medical grade materials. We manage the entire process ourselves, from design and prototyping to injection molding, assembly, packaging, and shipping. This vertical integration allows us to control quality, refine designs quickly, offer a huge range of sensory preferences, and ensure every product meets our standards for safety and durability.
We've always believed that tools alone aren't enough. Understanding needs — whether it's chewing, sensory seeking, or oral motor / feeding challenges — helps people reach their goals faster. So you'll find our blog packed full of education through articles, videos, and resources that can help you better understand sensory and therapeutic needs.
Today, ARK continues to grow while staying true to our foundations. We're now led by a team that includes Debbie and John's children, Evan and Rebecca. And we're committed to continuing to bring you meaningful solutions and supporting every sensory journey. We have a lot of exciting new launches in the works, so stay tuned!
We're grateful that ARK is part of so many lives — whether you're a therapist, parent, educator, or someone looking for a better tool for yourself. Thank you for trusting us. And if you ever have a question, an idea, or a challenge you're trying to solve, we're always listening.
