For Excessive Chewing
ARK's Y-Chew® and Grabber® are excellent outlets for excessive chewing. The Grabber® was specifically designed for a child with whose parents were so desperate, they began giving their son dog toys to chew on. ARK wanted to be able to offer a safe and non-toxic alternative, and so became the Grabber® and later Y-Chew. Each time an individual reaches for an inappropriate item to chew on, simply replace it with a Grabber® or Y-Chew. Be consistent and patient. The resiliency and textures of these chew tools will give them the extra sensory input that they crave, and the long extensions will allow them to reach all the way back to the molar area. You can also incorporate more hard-to-chew foods into their diets, such as apples, carrots, and celery.
Please remember that although these chew tools are excellent alternatives to dog toys and other hazardous items, they are not a cure. The child who inspired the Grabber® required additional intervention strategies to assist in regulating this behavior. These included occupational therapy to address the sensory issues, speech/feeding therapy to make changes in his diet (such as including more harder-to-chew foods), and eventually medical management. Since he consistently chewed on the same spot on the Grabber®, it needed to be replaced approximately every 2 weeks (he chewed 3-4 hours per day). They were checked at least on a daily basis if not more for signs of wear and tear that would indicate the need for replacement. The XT (Xtra Tough) versions last longer for aggressive chewers.
