The Out-of-Sync Child broke new ground by identifying Sensory Processing Disorder, a common but frequently misdiagnosed problem in which the central nervous system misinterprets messages from the senses. The possible symptoms are bewilderingly broad. A child can be rambunctious, withdrawn, clumsy, fearful, hostile, ultra-sensitive, or lacking much apparent sensitivity, among many other unwanted traits. The three broad types are tactile (the sense of touch), vestibular (involving balance and gravity), and proprioceptive (dealing with ligaments, joints, and muscles). The author devised tables and checklists to help analyze a child's behaviors and also offers strategies for the child's encouragement - and she strongly recommends occupational therapy instead of medication as the treatment of choice.
