Thank you for designing such wonderful oral motor tools."

For Toothbrushing
ARK has two Brush Tips to help with toothbrushing - one soft version and another slightly harder version. Both are to be used with the Z-Vibe® or DnZ-Vibe®. Many individuals find vibration calming and soothing, and so they may be more open to toothbrushing with vibration. You can also try using the Popette Tip with a Toothette or DentaSwab.
To start, gum massage is a great overall exercise to do, as it allows you to access all areas of the mouth. You can try this with the Brush Tips or with a Tiny Teether. Please be aware that if the individual hasn't been routinely brushing, the gums may be sensitive. There are toothpastes available for sensitive teeth. You can also change the flavor of the toothpaste, as there may be one that is preferred over of the present one, which will increase tolerance. Using your fingertip may be best in the beginning instead of a toothbrush or the Brush Tip. Model by brushing your own teeth. Take turns and let the individual brush your teeth (with your own Brush Tip or toothbrush). Sing songs, count, say the ABC's. Giving them a timeline and letting them know that you are going to stop when you count to 3 or 5 can reduce the stress because they know when it will end. Be on time! Sometimes choosing another spot other than the bathroom can help, perhaps the kitchen or a cozy chair. Mirrors may be overstimulating and distracting, so monitor their use. Is the temperature of the water too cold? Too hot? Even if the individual just puts toothpaste on the brush, that's a starts. Remember to take baby steps. Sometimes it may be someone other than yourself to get the individual to brush their teeth. So, check and see if an ABA therapist, an aunt, teacher, or sibling, can be of assistance here. The end goal is dental hygiene.
